Thousands of people born into other languages desire to learn English. Non-native English speakers have unique reasons for learning English. They also have individual goals. Whatever the reasons, there are several options for learning English for special purposes, also called English as a second language. Private tutoring is an excellent way to learn but can be very expensive. Also, native speakers who are also excellent teachers can be difficult to find. On-site training programs and collegiate courses also teach English to non-native speakers. These can be expensive and time-consuming.

One very successful method that has emerged in the last ten years is online one-on-one English language training courses. These companies connect students to qualified, native English speaking teachers who meet via the internet. Although some do this through emails and phone calls, the best use video conferencing online. Using video conferencing to teach English for special purposes eliminates wait time for feedback and allows questions to be answered as soon as they arise. It also allows for communication through body language, which accounts for 55% of all spoken communication. It has all the benefits of a private tutor without the hassle of locating a qualified teacher or scheduling time together.

Excellent English training programs offer a wide availability of times to meet with teachers, making scheduling easier. They locate and hire highly trained teachers who speak English as a first language. They also tailor the program to fit the needs of the student. When learning English for special purposes, each purpose has a unique vocabulary. Focused training can help students achieve their goals without wasting time and money on material that is unneeded. The best training businesses use teachers who have experience teaching English as a second language and are familiar with different cultures.

The representatives at these companies should answer questions promptly and in a friendly manner. The relationship between teacher and is essential to speed the process of language acquisition. The comfortable level needs to be high enough to ask and answer any and all questions. Viewing a video of a sample lesson is ideal when choosing a program. It gives an idea of what the experience is like for an English language student. If you need help learning English for special purposes, such as test preparation, job interviews, business, school, travel, or many more, you can find help at an online English training program. Look for company websites that follow these guidelines and check out their sample videos. Start your English-speaking future today.

What Exactly are Homophones?

Basically, homophones are defined as words which sound exactly alike, but are spelled differently and have different meanings. Not only are they oftentimes confusing for English as a foreign language learner, but even for native speakers as well. Homophones though, can be interesting and fun to teach to learners who usually enjoy the play of word sounds even if they don’t always quite understand the meanings, usage and definitions. Let’s have a brief look at some of the scores of double and triple homophones in the English language.

Triple Homophones in the English Language

There are fewer triple homophones in the English language than double homophones so we’ll look at few of these first.

By buy bye

Pete peet peat

To too two

Four fore for

Despite the differences in spellings, there is essentially no discernable difference in the pronunciation between these three-word homophone groups. Try as you might, you won’t hear any difference in the way they sound. Which one is being used becomes discernable only through its application in context.

Double Homophones in the English Language

When it comes to double or two-word homophone pairs in the English language, there is definitely no shortage of them. They seemingly come at you from almost every direction at times. Here is just a handful sampling of some of the more commonly heard of homophones in the English language.

Passed past

Pie pi

Choose chews

Die dye

Sex sects

Do due

Nose knows

Their there

Eye I

Feat feet

Beat beet

Meat meet

Hear here

Jeans genes

Where wear

Bourn bourne

We wee

In inn

Hi high

Made maid

Red read (past tense of read)

Blue blew

Great grate

See sea

Be bee

Close clothes

Eight ate

Hail hale

Won one

Pale pail

Male mail

Sail sale

Tail tale

Son sun

Hey hay

Bail bale

Peal peel

Heal heel

Seen scene

Shoe shoo

Yule you’ll

Flee flea

Tee tea

Him hymn

You ewe

No know

Which witch

Do dew

Many More Homophones Exist in the English Language

The list certainly goes on and on, but by now you certainly must get the idea.

Try having your learners use these in context to help their understanding of the meanings. Try a “spelling bee” using homophones or create short lists which give meanings between specific pairs of homophones. You can also be on the lookout for them when reading papers, articles and online texts. Anyway you might decide to use and teach the theme of homophones in the English language, they can be most interesting and fun for your English as a foreign language learners. Try them out for yourself and you’ll see.

Practice is one part of it. Learning how to observe is another part of it. Paying attention to what you see is yet another aspect.

If you know what you are looking for, it is a lot easier to find it. That is one principle that bird-watching shares with business and human relations and travel. If you know where you are going, it is easier to tell when you have reached your destination. If you have no direction or goals, you can amble and wander aimlessly for years without seeing birds or profits.

Form follows function. Therefore, I invite you to see that

* Bills
* Feet
* Wings
* Size and
* Shape

are all important ways of separating birds into different categories. But there is an even more important first step to help you identify the birds you see. Think about your role as a birdwatcher (birder). There you are appreciating the wonders of the natural world around you and the first simple observation you make is a real estate issue.

LOCATION. Location. LOCATION. Where are you? Identifying birds starts with this simple question.

For example, if you are on the beaches of Hawaii you can expect to see Hawaiian birds, like the magnificent frigate bird but you are not likely to see penguins or puffins. Or if you are standing on a rock overlooking the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia you can expect to see hawks, vultures, ravens, crows overhead, but not a roadrunner or sage grouse. This is because each of the types of birds (species) has its own range where it is most likely to find the environmental conditions suitable for its living needs.

The needs of each of the different types of birds varies with the season, too. During the mating season for each bird species, nesting materials and locations for nests are extremely important. In addition, once the baby birds hatch, they will need a lot of food. Therefore the selection of a nesting site near a good quality food source is critical to the survival of that brood of birds, and sometimes that also means to the survival of that entire species.

So, I was not joking when I said your specific location is very helpful to begin to learn what birds you are seeing or hearing. Some birds live in many places and have wide tolerances for environmental differences, house sparrows and house finches and starlings are examples of this broad adaptability. I have seen these three types of birds in every state in the United States that I have visited. (I still have a couple of states to explore.)

What makes bird-watching so much fun is looking for the types of birds that are specialized for particular locations or those which are really rare and hard to find. One example could be the phainopepla (FAY -no- pep-la) which is found in some riparian areas in the American Southwest. If you think of a cardinal with its red crest and black eyes you have the general shape and size of a phainopepla, except it is black and has red eyes and lives in the desert, not in Eastern or Northern forests.

I encourage you to start looking around at the wild animals that live near you. Too often we see exotic species on television and know more about the rainforest than we do about our own backyard. Once you start to see them, you can begin to observe them. Later, you can identify them if you choose. I believe you will begin to discover many different types of birds right in your neighborhood.

During these tough economic times, you need all the help you can get to make your resume outshine that of your competition. One sure way to boost your status would be to earn an MBA. Going back to school after you’ve been in the workplace could be a bit daunting, but the result could make a big difference in your career opportunities and potential for success.

There are several major issues you need to consider:

Location – As you evaluate MBA programs, one of the first things you will need to consider is the possibility of relocation. This decision will be easier to make if you are unmarried and or have few obligations connected to your local community. You will need to weigh the costs and benefits and, if you feel it is best to relocate, determine whether it should be a temporary, or possibly a permanent change.

Time Commitment – Because most MBA programs require work experience, candidates who are currently working may find it very difficult to attend classes full-time. Fortunately, there are many part-time programs that allow students to continue working while attending classes. Alternatively, there are programs that do not require students to be physically present in a classroom, but participate through online forums instead. This option allows for much more flexibility. Don’t forget to take into consideration the length of time it will take to complete the program.

Reputation – Not all MBA programs are the same. Every year the top business magazines publish rankings of business schools and individual programs. In addition, they are ranked by region and specialization. Take some time to see which schools, that meet your personal criteria, have the highest rank. The reputation of the MBA program that you attend could be the point of difference that lands you a job over a similar candidate.

Curriculum – Once you have selected a few schools, take a close look at the curriculum. What are their overriding philosophies? What makes their methodologies unique? In addition to the core courses, you will also want to look at the selection of electives. Make sure that the school you choose will give you the knowledge and skills that you most desire.

Admissions Requirements – What does each program require of its applicants? Make sure that your educational background and work experience meets the minimum requirements before you apply. You may be required to submit information about your successes and some of the obstacles you’ve overcome. Depending on your circumstances, you may have to accumulate more work experience before applying. While this may seem like a setback, it could provide you with some strong motivation for optimal performance.

Cost – Let’s not forget the cost. While the total cost of your MBA may be significant, keep in mind that your earning potential will increase significantly as a result. According to a recent article in the Financial Times, graduates of the top ranked MBA programs have seen their earnings increase more than 100% following the completion of their MBAs. Your current employer may be willing to contribute, or you may qualify for an educational loan to help make it more affordable.

So, as you can see, there are many factors to consider when evaluating an MBA program. Each school will provide information about the requirements, curriculum, school environment, and cost of their programs. These programs seem to have more flexibility than others, perhaps because the students have already had work experience and are likely looking to add to their successes. In order to attract the best candidates, these schools have designed MBA programs, their schedules, offerings and methodology, around the needs of their local business communities as well as the projected needs of the emerging global economy. Best wishes to you as you embark on your journey.

If you’ve spent the early part of the 2000s frozen in a block of ice then you missed it. Computers are taking over the world. This is music to the ears of computer geeks and specialists. A degree in computer science ensures you will always have a job opening as more firms rely on more technologies and more business focus their efforts on the Web.

The even better news for computer science majors is there are lots of computer science scholarships available. As tech firms have hit it big on Wall Street they have looked back to offer a hand up to the next generation of innovators, designers and programmers.

Like most majors, colleges of computer science offer their own in-house scholarships. These awards vary in amount, but the real money in the world of often lies outside the world of higher education.

Many tech-reliant firms, such as Hewlett Packard, Google and Sun Microsystems, offer computer science scholarships. Many of these scholarships are given out at a national level. But tech-based businesses do give awards through local schools or endow quality computer science programs that routinely provide qualified graduates and interns.

Microsoft, for example, gave out $500,000 in scholarships during the 2006-2007 school year. They have four basic types of computer science scholarships. They award general scholarships and scholarships for women, underrepresented minorities and students with disabilities. The bad news: You’ll be competing with students from across North America to get the money.

There is plenty of good news on the computer science scholarship front for women. There are loads of awards specifically for women entering computer science and related fields. These scholarships are supported by schools, private business and non-profit groups. There is a large push right now for more women to enter math- and science-related fields. The amount of scholarship money available may be the deciding factor if you’re a young woman considering computer science.

Dedication in your field is also needed in order for you to earn your doctorate degree. Unfortunately, not everyone can get a PhD especially in Management. Some do not have enough time while others lack financial support. Thus, they prefer to be employed rather than gaining more understanding on their field and get a PhD.

There is a vast range of work-related benefits if a person holds a Business Management PhD title. One of the main reasons why some people are so determine to be a PhD degree holder is because they want to land on the job that they have been dreaming of. There are a lot of companies that prefer people with PhD to work for them. You can have numerous employment options such as a business researcher and a college professor as well.

Without a doubt, those who have PhD in Business Management can also have a better start once employed. Compared to those who only have bachelor’s degree, they can immediately get higher pay even if this is their first job. And although a master’s degree can also put you a step ahead of the other job seekers related to business administration and management, you have bigger chances of being employed in the company of your dreams if you have PhD.

It may consume a lot of your time and money. But once you have earned your Business Management PhD, everything will be all worth it especially when cash starts to come in because you landed a good position in a company. If you have the brains, the determination, and the money to continue a doctorate degree then don’t hesitate to gain more knowledge and understanding in your chosen field.

Do colleges teach you how to make a living?

I was talking with an industrial psychologist once about college and making a living. The psychologist said: “the only people who go to college are the ones that aren’t smart enough to make a living without it!” Well, I think that is a gross exaggeration but there is some truth in it. But everyone needs to make a living some time, and the sooner we learn it the better off we are.

As a homeschooler you have the advantage of teaching your child this yourself. It comes naturally to some, some learn it via osmosis from their parents, and unfortunately some never seem to figure it out. Focusing some time on it with your child early will make a difference. I suggest that you teach your child how to make a living by comparing it to how businesses do it. Done right, your child will learn both, and get equipped for either a job or an entrepreneurial venture when he grows up. Here are a few simple things to start with:

Businesses have a purpose, to serve their customers; individuals’ purpose is to serve their employers. Businesses need a product or service that is in demand in the market place; individuals need a service that is in demand. Businesses need to keep their product/service current; individuals need to continue learning to keep theirs current. Businesses need sales people that have relationships with the customers; individuals need relationships with others for personal support, networking for job searches and to help others too.

Businesses need to know their financial situations; individuals need to manage their money also. Businesses need equity to support their business growth or downturns; individuals need savings to support large expenditures and reserves in case they lose their jobs. These are just a few simple comparisons, there are many more. If you are uncomfortable with businesses and how they work, find a friend that is in business or owns a business to talk with your child about these concepts.

Most business people will quickly pick up on the concepts here and can show your child how these things work in their business as well as how they would work for individuals. Not too many colleges I know think like business people, they are educators. I would highly recommend the homeschooler teaches this before investing a large amount of money in college so your child gets the most out of their education. You can teach your child to think like an entrepreneur, that will give him the options he/she needs to make a living.

Rob Severson, Author, Speaker and Financing Coach. I help businesses get new financing to pay off unhappy banks or for rapid growth. I have been in the financial business over 40 years and have a wide breadth of experience in business issues. I have successfully coached 100′s of business to get new financing. I know how to put a deal together. I also wrote a book “Connectiing Peace, Purpose & Prosperity” that is a memoir written for my family showinig them how I learned to live a life that is happy, joyous and free including making a living. It is a short interesting peek into an “average guy’s” life and what he tells his heirs. I also do speaking gigs on the subject for churches, schools, AA groups and others.

What methodologists and teachers consider differentiates Business English from General English has obvious implications on how Business English is taught, along with the dominant approaches in English language teaching at any given time. We can see this by taking a brief look at developments in Business English teaching.

In the late 1960s and 1970s it was felt that the difference between Business English and General English was mainly specialist vocabulary, and this was reflected in the coursebooks and materials of the time. These focused largely on texts with comprehension questions, vocabulary exercises, and repetition drills. Business skills and application to real-life situations were not generally focused on.

A move towards greater skills training in a business context occurred in 1972 with the publication of the BBC coursebook and video English for Business, which incorporated greater emphasis on areas such as listening skills development, dialogue practice and role-plays, therefore accepting the need to develop students’ skills to deal with practical situations. This trend continued during the mid-1970s and 1980s, when Business English teaching followed the move in General English teaching towards a more functional syllabus. The focus was now on functional language and the teaching of formulaic phrases for recommending, agreeing, disagreeing etc. These were introducedin business contexts and practised in role-plays of common business situations such as making appointments, making introductions, business lunches etc.

From the late 1980s the focus shifted to working on business communication skills. This was largely due to the development of company training programmes in the late 1980s, which began to provide employees with opportunities to attend courses in presentation techniques, negotiating and effective meeting skills, among other things. This of course led to the publication of books and materials onbusiness communication skills. This has profoundly influenced Business English teaching up to the present day in that the focus on Business communication skills forms a major component of most current Business English courses and coursebooks.

To conclude, and broadly-speaking, the focus on real-world communication, which is prevalent in much contemporary Business English teaching, fits in neatly with the principles of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), the predominant approach toEnglish language teaching in the world for the past twenty years. In essence this is an approach to language teaching where the underlying key objective is to develop the learners’ ability to use language to communicate effectively. An important point related to CLT is that fluency and acceptable language is the primary goal. Language accuracy is judged in context.
