One of the latest additions to Mandarin curriculums is what is known in the industry as Applied Mandarin. Few schools have yet adapted the concept but it is my belief that Applied Mandarin or AM will, within say 5 years, be a cornerstone in the way that private language education teach Mandarin. The aim of the concept is to make the experience of studying Mandarin much more active. All research into how the brain assimilates new information indicates that the process is action oriented. It also shows that personal relevance and usability are key components. The hope is that Applied Mandarin will combine these three facets of our cognitive senses and act as a compliment to regular classes.

So what examples are there of when relevant action, that is useful, can be harnessed for learning purposes? The key lies in natural communication. In focusing on everyday content, in an applied setting, the three cornerstones are obtained. To make it a bit more fun, and for it to act as a suitable counterweight to normal classes, the best activities are often competitions.

They start of with simple things, but they quickly get harder. Here is a list of a few advanced instances of Applied Mandarin.

Street food sell-off (Negotiation/Selling)
First a class on how to make a dish of basic Chinese street food, then a competition to see who can sell the most in one evening. Finish the night with a huge party. All proceeds go to charity. Learning objective: practice numbers, selling, polite basic conversation

Beijing Come Dine with Me (Chinese characters, written communication)
After this, students will be able to create a seriously impressive dinner for friends and family at home. Teams do their own cooking (after instruction from a Chinese chef) and then they compete in throwing the nicest dinner party. Before the party they send out menus. Learning objective: Review the LO’s from Chinese Menu Reading and Street Food Sell-off.

Produce a TV- show (Co-operation)
We enter the TV-studio that we have free access to after a planning meeting with native speakers and produce the next great You-Tube hit, travel documentary for your friends and family at home, news cast or whatever else you and your Chinese team members come up with. Voting takes place, the best production gets a great price to enjoy with their new Chinese friends. Learning objective: practice conversation and cooperation

Produce a Radio-Show (Co-operation)
See “Produce a TV-show”. Learning objective: practice conversation and cooperation.

Promote a night club event (Co-operation and Negotiation)
So you want to live in China? Here negotiation, selling and overcrowded markets are everywhere. Take your skills to the streets and promote a night club event. All proceeds go to charity. Learning objective: practice conversation and selling

Bargaining Competition (Negotiations)
As we said, just above; negotiation, selling and overcrowded markets are a great part of life here. Learn how to get what you deserve and then compete to show your skills to the world. Learning objective: Being able to discuss a price in Chinese and become more familiar with some great bargaining tricks.

Man a Market Stall (Co-operation, Selling and Negotiations)
It is one thing to be able to buy; it is completely different ball game to sell. You will be paired up with a Chinese professional that knows every single trick in the book of selling and you will go to work together… this will equip you with some serious skills for life in China and abroad as well as being truly enjoyable and a great story to tell your grandchildren. Learning objective: Practice conversation and selling from a Chinese perspective

From an egg to a Roasted Duck (Negotiations)
We give each team four eggs. They need to go out in Beijing and trade these eggs for something of greater value, say 5 apples, then find another person to trade 5 apples for 2 avocados, etc. The winner is the one that reaches the highest value of the final product by a certain time. They get a Beijing Roast Duck dinner (or a vegetarian equivalent) which is one of the nicest culinary delights around. Learning objective: to practice negotiations in Chinese.

Rui Ming works for a Mandarin language Academy in Beijing that is a great option for those that want to learn Mandarin. If you are interested in more information about learning Mandarin in Beijing, please consult the website of Beijing Gateway Academy.

Teaching is a very holy career compared with other kinds. However, teaching is not so easy to perform. It is specially important for those who teach English to their students.

Probably their students are not English speakers who often feel puzzled about their teacher. Certainly another possibility is that the students are all English speakers who are researching this language. But now we just leave them alone for a while.

What do you want your students to learn from you? English vocabulary, English grammar, very fluent English speaking, or English writing? Actually they are too many for the students to accept in one day or two, and you cannot do them at the same time on the other hand. I think the key point is to tell them how to learn this language and free their mind to explore their own ways.

But for communication and practical purposes, you should teach your students to establish a ability to speak English. But in fact, you need to teach them the basic English speaking traditions and habits in daily communication. I think your students will be very happy to learn.

But to achieve this target, you need to give them proper instructions in your daily life as well. It is hard, but very beneficial to your students who are thirsty to learn more. That refers to another sort of communication: informal talk.

Before class starts, you should take some time to chat with your students. Don’t belittle such a chat! It is rather helpful! You don’t need to be a teacher this time, just be one of their good friends. Listen to them and learn their language at the same time. And try to stand in their shoes no matter how big your feet are!

Once winning their confidence, you can drive them easily. But your drive is to help them achieve something wonderful. I mean you can spread your ideas now!

But of course you as a teacher should learn as well, for you need to output everyday to your students. So you must have something to output. Learn Rosetta Stone English for a period to see if you can find something shining for students.

I have touched a lot things that are really significant and powerful, like Rosetta Stone Spanish, Instant Immersion etc. They are language learning tools. Certainly I have learned some other things as well.

You can learn Korean online quickly and easily as long as your chosen approach is an effective one. Many people are intimidated at the thought of learning Korean, but the reality is that the Hangul writing system used in Korean has been recognized as one of the most organized and simple writing systems.

This is because a lot of effort has gone in to standardizing both spoken and written Korean. That very standardization is helpful to those wanting to learn Korean online or offline.

To learn Korean online with a great online Korean program is to avail of many of the benefits of immersion in Korean conversation. This piece is missing from many of the alternative methods for learning Korean and this is a shame because it is an essential component of a successful approach.

Leaving aside the elements of vocabulary and verb learning for a moment – and these are important elements – the biggest challenge to learning any language is usually the fact that you are already programmed to think in your native language. As an English speaker, you automatically think of what you are going to say in your native language.

This means you are constructing your sentences with English sentence structure! That is only natural, but it is the element you must overcome as you learn a new language such as Korean.

The best way to overcome this is to gain immersion in Korean conversation. If you choose to learn Korean online there are some great courses which get you the immersion you need along with the guidance to understand the nuances which are relevant to speaking Korean naturally.

The important thing to make sure of is that the immersion you are experiencing is relevant and complete. It needs to be more than just pronunciation lessons for individual Korean words. While that is important in and of itself, it is not the type of immersion which is going to help you to master conversational Korean.

Instead, you need to make sure that the course you choose to learn Korean online incorporates simulated and guided immersion in complete conversations in a contextual setting. By contextual I mean relevant to the reason why you are learning Korean in the first place.

Perhaps you have a trip coming up? Or perhaps your job requires some knowledge of spoken Korean? Whatever the reason, you will be well served by customizing the initial Korean learning to that context. In that way, you tailor your learn Korean online efforts to your immediate needs.

The author is an expert in linguistics who has written extensively on the topic of language-learning.

See why Learning Korean Language Online makes great sense, or get started right away with an introductory course: Learn Korean Online Free.

Spanish is a beautiful language to both speak and listen to and is considered by many to be one of the easier languages to learn. If you are considering learning this wonderful language then these four methods, which are the most commonly used methods for doing so, are worth considering.

Immersion Courses

Probably the method that offers the quickest results, immersion courses are becoming increasingly popular with many people who want to learn Spanish. They are successful because they completely immerse the student into Spanish, language and culture, on a daily basis, often not permitting the use of English at all!

Unfortunately, immersion courses come at a price…time away and cost. It is generally the case that theses types of courses are located in Spanish speaking countries (although not always the case) and will take a few weeks to complete they are also very expensive as you not only pay for the course but for food and accommodation in many cases.

Benefits:

* Learn Spanish Quickly
* Learn about Spanish culture and interact with the local Spanish community.

Negatives:

* Requires time away from home
* Very Expensive for most people

Traditional Classroom Courses

The second method that many people use to learn to speak Spanish has been used for a long time and was a favorite of many and that is the traditional classroom course, taken at a local University or Community College. Pretty much all colleges provide Spanish classes so you shouldn’t need to travel too far.

Whilst learning in a classroom environment may provide great interaction and are a great way to learn Spanish for some people, there are definitely a few drawbacks with using this method. The main issue with this traditional method of study is that the courses are very rigid, well at least the timetables are! There is no flexibility at all, if a class is scheduled for a Friday night at 7pm and you can’t make it till 8pm…tough you miss the lesson, not to mention the money you will have already paid for the course. Oh..and a classroom class is not particularly cheap either and is often beyond that which many can afford to pay.

Also…if you want, or need, to learn Spanish quickly a classroom course is probably the slowest method of learning because most courses will run alongside school semesters, providing one, maybe two, lessons a week, it will probably take you a while before you start to see any worthwhile results.

Benefits:

* Generally local to where you live
* Good social interactivity

Negatives:

* Takes a long time to see results
* Expensive for most people
* No flexibility

Self Tuition Books

There are a massive number of self study books available to help teach the Spanish language student learn to speak Spanish. These books are a flexible, affordable way to learn Spanish. With a self study book you are able to take it with you and study wherever you want, but there are some problems with this method of learning Spanish also.

As the self teach book is only a book it is impossible for the student to understand and learn how words in Spanish are pronounced and also there is a motivational issue; languages are generally more interesting when you can hear them being spoken rather than just reading the language.

Benefits:

* Very Affordable
* Flexible Method of Learning Spanish

Negatives:

* No Interaction
* No Motivation to Complete course due to…
* No Audio Reference for Learning Pronunciation and Gaining Conversational Skills

Online Spanish Courses

That brings us to our final method of learning Spanish the learn Spanish software program or, online course. This method of learning Spanish has increased in popularity immensely recently, simply because it ticks so many of the boxes.

Flexibility is, for many people, the number one priority when choosing how to learn Spanish and learning with the use of an online course allows individuals to study when they want no matter what time of day or night. The only downside of this versatility is that it isn’t always possible to have your home computer and internet connection with you.

When compared to a self study book, online courses are normally a little more expensive but they do provide the interaction and audio that books do not, which does counter the extra cost. There are varying degrees of cost and quality available but some of the most popular courses are very affordable and offer exceptional quality comparable to courses that cost a great deal more.

Due to the flexibility of these courses and the fact that more focus is placed upon learning conversational Spanish they make it possible to learn Spanish very quickly if you choose or at a slower pace if you are in no rush. In other words, you control how quickly you learn.

Support is another key element offered by many of these courses and is possible because of the freedom an online interface provides; if you have a specific problem you are able to speak to other users on course forums or similar portals and very quickly receive answers or a resolution.

Benefits:

* Affordable for the vast majority of people
* Extremely Flexible
* Learn Spanish Quickly or Slowly, you set the pace.
* Interactive learning, often including online games and quizes
* Support network
* Quality learning material
* Much more enjoyable than traditional methods of self study

Negatives:

* Not as portable or (generally) as cheap as a self study book

Learning how to say ‘hello’ in Spanish is the first step of many you will take when learning Spanish the path will definitely become harder but these early basic greetings are the food and water of any language and their importance can never be understated.

Do not worry about the formation and the grammar of these early phrases just relax and concentrate on the sound that each of the following phrases makes as you say them, greetings are the first impression you will make when speaking to a Spanish speaker so practice saying them regularly.

When you want to say ‘Hello!’ in Spanish you use the word “¡Hola!”

In Spanish the ‘h’ is silent so you would pronounce ‘Hola’ as ‘olla’. This greeting is widely used as in English so you will gain lots of experience using it.

There are of course more formal greetings:

Good Morning which is “Buenas días”.
This is pronounced as ‘bwenas deeas’ The ‘ue’ is pronounced as a ‘w’ and the accented ‘i’ in “días” as an emphasized ‘ee’.
Good Afternoon which is “Buenas tardes”.
“Tardes” is pronounced ‘tarrdais’ with a very slight roll on the ‘r’.
Good Evening or Good Night is “Buenas Noches”.
“Noches” is pronounced ‘notchais’

If you would like to ask someone how they are you would say:

“¿Cómo estás?” – How are you?

You could also use “está” if you were asking someone you did not know as a sign of respect, however, apart from asking high ranking dignatories this form is rarely used nowadays. Another more informal way of asking someone this is to say:

“¿Qué tal?” – How’s it going? or How are you?

When you want to say goodbye to somebody you would say:

“¡Adiós!” – Good bye

Now, not to confuse you too much, it is important, should you ever hear it being used in this manner, but “adiós” is also used frequently to say ‘hello’ in Spanish, but only when passing someone very briefly.

Just starting to learn Spanish? The best, and most popular, way of doing so is to use a learn Spanish software course and you will find these Learn Spanish Software Reviews both concise and very informative.

If your school-aged child is not fond of reading, there may be underlying reasons. If there is difficulty for the child it can be embarrassing and frustrating to address the issue unless the proper learning technique is used. By reverting back to the basic method of synthetic phonics you can help get your child’s reading skills up to grade level and make reading an exciting activity that they are eager to indulge in.

Synthetic phonics teach kids to approach words on the basic level of letters and sounds. This makes reading skills more accessible for those that have been slow to gain them using the alternative method of teaching, analytic phonics. Children are taught to approach the concept of reading letter by letter and sound by sound. As they find that they are able to sound out the words before them, they gain confidence, and an eagerness to learn more.

The analytic approach is used to teach children to approach more difficult word groups. It helps learners break down work structure. With this method they are taught to view the word as a whole and to use the beginning and ending sound to decipher the word. This helps learners progress to more advanced reading levels.

Students cannot thrive however, when using the analytic approach if they have not been properly grounded in basic phonetic methods of reading. The two forms of teaching complement each other. This means that if your grade school child is not keeping pace with his or her peers, the best programs that you can implement will be those that revert back to synthetic phonetic interpretation.

There are numerous products to choose from, including those that suffice as curriculum for home schooling. You can read online ratings and reviews to determine which products deliver top quality results. Finding one that is appropriate for the age and reading level of your child is the key to reading success.

Does your school-aged child dislike reading? Synthetic phonics is the solution. Get the low down now on http://www.follifootfarm.co.uk
